SIA Approved Contractor Recognition

Businesses  and companies looking to appoint a security company can be further assured of Sector Security’s capability and high standards following their recent audit by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) which is responsible for the licensing of the private security industry.

Says Margaret Wilson, Managing Director, ‘After recently undergoing a rigorous inspection and audit process we are pleased to say that by maintaining the highest standards of quality management and service to clients Sector Security have retained our status as an approved contractor (ACS).

ACS companies must demonstrate to an independent assessor that they have met a series of requirements covering a range of business and management indicators that demonstrate high security service standards. As companies which do not maintain or improve their service standards can have their approved contractor status withdrawn our success shows that we have the some of the best people in the private security sector working for us. The retention of approved contractor status is a recognition of the dedication of all our personnel.’

Age sector no barrier to security career

A leading Northern security company based in Preston with regional offices in Manchester and Leeds does not see age as a barrier to developing and a career in security. Commercial Director, Dirk Wilson of Sector Security commented, “Judging a person based on age alone is so misguided and we believe that employers are increasingly recognising the value and contribution of older employees. It’s skills, competence, attitude and abilities that count, coupled with life experience gained over the years.

As a recognised NSI (National Security Inspectorate) ‘Gold Award’ approved company, Sector Security do not specify age limits or restrictions when making new appointments as it recruits those who we believe are best for the job.

We have a diverse workforce in terms of backgrounds and ages, which provides for a balanced team with varied job experience and people skills. Companies can benefit from appointing older skilled people in the 50+ bracket, as they make a positive commitment to a change in career direction and value the stimulation and social contact. They are also more likely to be flexible over working hours as family and social demands are often not so time sensitive.”

PEP talk opened the door

Recently, fifty-six year old John Buck who had been unemployed for almost a year started talking with Preston Employment Partnership (PEP), who provided personal support, job contacts and application skills and interview training - sufficient to restore and boost John’s

confidence. Over a six week period, he contacted many companies and was eventually appointed by Sector Security.

Although John Buck had no previous experience in the security industry, Sector Security fully supports all new employees with comprehensive training in order for each security officer to achieve a recognised SIA licence. The licensing of security officers was introduced back in 2005 by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to improve the professional standards of the industry and provide customers with a benchmark and quality assurance of security service providers.

To quote Nilam Karia, Sector’s Regional Operations Director, “John gave a 100% in his training and is a first class employee,  reliable, conscientious and willingly takes on responsibility. The Preston Employment Partnership ‘PEP’ talk with John Buck gave him the confidence and self believe to open doors and venture on a new career, which has no age barriers at Sector Security. Hopefully this story will encourage other people of middle age and upwards to appreciate that they have a lot to offer and there are companies out there willing to employ them.”
